Dog training isn’t just for teaching pooches how to fetch, these lessons can also be for canines with special needs such as mobility issues that make it difficult for them to move like other dogs. Or sensory issues like sight or hearing impairment that can make normal visual or auditory cues and commands hard to detect. Thankfully, Canine Path works with special needs dogs – including deaf, blind and mobility impaired pooches. Dog training expert Suzanne Mackay will help West Los Angeles dog owners with special needs dogs so that their fur babies can live their best lives.

Contrary to what most might expect, dogs that are blind and deaf, have limited mobility or other physical issues can still be trained! In fact it could be said that they are the ones who need training the most in order to overcome their disadvantages.

Once we understand what a dog’s physical limitations are we can develop a plan to address their training and behavioral issues. Dogs are incredibly resilient and don’t dwell on their limitations. Instead, they focus on their abilities, and we are happy to design a West LA dog training plan that works with a dog’s limitations and addresses what they can do and can learn.

We have a proven track record of training deaf and blind dogs, having trained many canines with hearing impediments as well as showing owners how to care and handle deaf and blind dogs as well as those with other special needs. This is very achievable because, for example, while deaf dogs have difficulty hearing they remain perfectly capable in other aspects and can do most things other dogs can do – even becoming service dogs.

Deaf dogs can learn based on visual cues and commands whereas blind dogs must be trained primarily using voice commands.

The main thing to note is that special needs dogs process their environment differently and thus dog owners must account for this. Private dog training lessons for special needs canines will factor in their conditions, so the sessions will be tailored to their needs as well as that of their owners.
