When dogs react negatively to fireworks, it is because of fear and anxiety due to their more acute senses of hearing and smell, which don’t take too well to the loud booms and bangs that come with New Year’s Eve and Fourth of July celebrations. The same goes for the acrid smell that comes with fireworks.
But these disturbing sensations can be mitigated through simple steps including:
- Keep all of the windows closed and maybe let your dog stay in a room that has a bit more padding and sound dampening to lessen the effect of the booming and banging sounds.
- Deploy a crate with extra blankets in it to make your dog feel safe and secure.
- Let your dog grow gradually accustomed to loud sounds like those of fireworks and thunder. Play recordings of those sounds before your dog’s playtime, eating and bedtime. Over time, increase the loudness of the sound. Eventually, they will develop a more positive association with it or at least regard it as a neutral sensation.
- Mask the sound of fireworks with fans, TV or music, normal sounds in the house so your dog won’t notice the outside noises as much.
- Give your puppy a comfortably snug shirt that will help them feel safer.
