Why You Should Consider Socialization Training for your Puppy

Puppy Socialization isn’t just introducing dogs to new stuff, dogs – especially puppies – need exposure to new environments, people and animals in a positive way. A well-adjusted puppy should meet 100 new people in their first 100 days of life. When puppies under 4 months old are positively socialized, it will have a long-lasting effect that will result in a well-adjusted canine that has fun learning new things and meeting new people.

But if this process is not done right and the puppy has fearful experiences, this can have long-lasting negative effects.

During a private training session, your puppy will be in the care of a professional dog trainer who will ensure that negative interactions will be avoided. To avoid negative interactions, the process must follow basic rules including:

Keeping distance: Unless the dog wants to move forward, new situations or persons should be some distance away. The dog should not be pulled towards something if the dog is leashed.

Using treats: Yummy treats for the dog as it experiences something new will help create positive associations. And if the dog stops going for the treats, this shows that it is getting nervous and more distance is needed.

Going slow: The pace of the process should be determined by the puppy. Trainers must be patient and the puppy should not be forced, because this will backfire and increase anxiety.

Exposing dogs to stimuli is not socialization, the process needs the guidance of professional, positive force-free dog trainers to ensure that the training is successful. When puppy socialization is done right, it will be ultimately rewarding for both the canine and its fur parents and will set the foundation for good behaviors and positive experiences for the rest of the pup’s life.
